Polyethylene (Poly)
Polyethylene is used for pipe and fittings for irrigation systems. It is generally black in colour and is flexible, allowing it to be easily used in garden beds and small irrigation systems.
It is less expensive than PVC. Poly pipe is sometimes known as 'trickle pipe'.
General information:
- pipe sizes of 3mm - 200mm.
- available as high density that is used where strength is a requirement, eg farms.
- available as low density that is used for low volume irrigation, eg domestic systems.
- poly pipe can easily be joined with screwed or push in fitting.
- has a high resistance to degradation in ultra violet light - suitable for surface use.
- can be easily damaged by external forces such as tools, machinery, cigarette butts.
- softens with heat.
