Soil pH and nutrient availability

The availability of nutrients to turf plants is greatly influenced by the soil pH. The amount of a particular element that can be taken up by the plant roots changes according to how acidic or alkaline the soil is.

For example, nitrogen is best absorbed by turf plants at a pH of between six and eight. If soil pH is any higher or lower than this range then nitrogen absorption is compromised or begins to be 'locked out'.
