Banksia name after Sir Joesph Banks, the famous botanist who explored with Captain Cook. Ericifolia = heath-like leaves.

Growth habit:

Medium to tall shrub.

Dimensions:

Up to 7m high x 2m wide.

Foliage:

Bright green linear leaves about 15mm long.

Flower:

Flower spike 500-600mm long x 80-100mm wide. Orange/red colour.

Fruit:

Cone containing follicles.

Other features:

Lime and salt tolerant, grows in seaside areas with protection. Sensitive to phospherus. Has cluster or proteoid roots.

Natural distribution:

Coastal New South Wales.

Soils:

Shallow sandy clay soils, well drained.

Natural vegetation:

Open heath, woodlands and forests. Sometimes in semi swamps.

Landcare use:

Revegetation, bird attracting and nectar supply. Windbreak.

Seeds.

Phytophthora dieback. Few other pests or diseases.
