Keeping the staff vertical

The surveyor's staff must be held vertically for an accurate measurement to be made. If it is tilted backwards or forwards then the measurement will increase. Consequently, if a staff levelling bubble is not available, the point at which the staff is vertical can be located as the lowest reading.
