Pegging out and setting string lines
Pegging out and setting string lines defines an area to be marked. Pegs are used to mark specific points, such as the ends or corners of a marked area. String lines are used to help define lines and levels in a pegged out area. In most cases, the string line is attached to a peg or marker pin. Nylon or cotton string about two to three millimetres in diameter is often used.
Note: Rope has been used in the following photos rather than string line so that the knots can be seen clearly.
Fastening string lines to pegs
|
1. Use a double half-hitch knot to fasten the string to the starter peg. Form the knot as shown and attach it to the peg, then adjust it to the required level.

2. Pull the string out to the next peg and fasten it to the peg using a half hitch. To do a half hitch, pull the line tight around the peg and bring it under itself. In the following image, the line comes in from the left, loops tightly around the peg and is brought in under itself and pulled to the right. The tension holds the loop in place.

If you intend to set out a straight line, position the start and end pegs first and pull a string line tight between these pegs. Then set out the intermediate pegs so that they are just touching the string line and fasten the line to these pegs using a half hitch. If you are setting out long straight lines, intermediate pins should be set exactly halfway between the start and end peg.
