Preparing chemicals

Use the following procedure when preparing chemicals:

1. Wear the appropriate personal protection equipment for the job.
   
   
2. Collect chemicals from locked chemical store.
   
   
3. Collect measuring beakers or large containers to transfer chemicals and liquids from chemical containers.
   
   
4. Collect equipment for mixing or stirring.
   
   
5. Place chemicals and equipment in a safe handling area.
   
   
6. Check the label carefully to find out the exact amount you need to mix and no more. If you are combining chemicals they must be compatible and sometimes the mixing order is critical. Incompatible herbicides and additives may separate in the tank or result in sludges and lumps.
   
   
7. Use clean water. Dam or bore water may contain organic matter or clay particles that can block spray equipment. Dirty water may inactivate the herbicide, for example, glyphosate. If possible use soft water, free of dissolved calcium.
   
   
8. Hold the container so the label is uppermost, particularly when pouring liquid from a container. This avoids dribbles over the label.
   
   
9. Avoid excessive agitation because of foaming if you are adding a wetting agent.
   
   
10. Return the sealed containers to the locked chemical store.
    
    
11. Do not eat or smoke while decanting or mixing.
    
    
12. Wash your hands well with soap and water when finished and before drinking, eating, smoking or going to the toilet.

These procedures are a guide to show you the steps involved with preparing chemicals. Remember, undiluted chemicals are more dangerous than prepared chemicals. Always check with your supervisor for procedures relevant to your workplace.
