Map title - The title of the map identifies the map.
Map scale - This scale allows you to work out the size relationship between the features shown on the map and the same features on the earth's surface. It is expressed as a ratio or a fraction. A common scale, for example, is 1:100 000. For a map with this scale 1 cm would equal 100 000 cm or 1 km. The map scale is usually accompanied by a scale bar that is used as an easy method of measuring distance on the map.
Legend or key - The legend identifies any symbols found on the map. For example, if you found a cross on your map, you would look at the legend to find out what it represents.
North point diagram - This determines the direction on the map. North usually points to the top of the map.
Edition and date of production - It is important to know when your map was produced so that you know how up-to-date the information on the map is. You need to make sure yu are using the most recent version.
