Prefers neutral to acid soils. Needs good drainage and, in wet soils, maybe sensitive to root diseases. Frost hardy. Tolerates extended dry periods. Turn yellow in alkaline soil.

Extremely hardy and adaptable. Useful as a low screening or windbreak shrub. The white flowers are excellent for lighting up a dull position.

Very hardy and well established in cultivation. Responds well to slow-release fertilisers but not phosphate. Does best in dappled shade, but will tolerate semi-shade and full sun. Responds well to light or heavy pruning, and appreciates mulching.
