Core sampling

There are six simple steps to core sampling:

Step 1: Representative sampling

Step 2: Find clean soil

Step 3: Measure and record

Step 4: Replace

Step 5: Clean equipment

Step 6: Calculate

Do you think you've got all that? Why not test yourself?

Measuring a core sample.

Step 1: Representative sampling

Take at least ten core samples from the area you are interested in. These should be taken randomly over the area, spreading the sampling widely.

Taking core samples to check thatch, mat and soil compaction.

Note that the type of core sampler used to test for soil nutrient levels is much smaller than the sampler used for checking thatch, mat and soil compaction. These smaller diameter samplers are also limited to taking samples from the top 100 mm, as this is where most of the nutrients should be. Using a smaller diameter core sampler also allows multiple sampling without disturbing the playing surface.

Step 2: Find clean soil

The core sample needs to be deep enough to penetrate down to clean soil. This will ensure that the corer has reached below the thatch and mat layers.

Step 3: Measure and record

Measure the sample from the surface of the grass to the start of the clean soil with a ruler or measuring tape. Record this figure on your record sheet.

Step 4: Replace

Once you have recorded the data required, immediately replace the sample. There is no need for it to be out of the ground for longer than necessary as it may dry out.

Make sure that the sample matches the existing turf surface level. Too high and the area will be scalped when it is next mown, too low and it will disrupt the playing surface.

Step 5: Clean equipment

Once all samples have been taken, make sure to wash down the sampling equipment to remove any soil, bacteria or fungi. This is to avoid transfer to future samples.

Step 6: Calculate

Collate all measurements taken and calculate the average depth of the thatch and mat layers. Date and file this information for future reference.

Test yourself

Drag the steps on the left into the correct order on the right. Each step will 'stick' if you have chosen correctly or bounce back if you are incorrect. Keep trying until all steps are in the correct order on the right hand side.
