Safe disposal of chemical containers
Once a chemical container has been emptied it needs to be:
- drained for at least 30 seconds to make sure there is nothing left in it
- rinsed at least 3 times with fresh water or with the manufacturer's recommended solvent (check the product label to find this out).
Once containers have been cleaned properly they can then be re-used or disposed of.
Disposing of containers
There are three disposal options for chemical containers:
- Containers can be punctured, crushed and buried deeper than 500 millimetres. This must occur in a marked disposal pit designed specifically for the purpose, clear of waterways, vegetation and roots.
- Dispose of containers at the local rubbish tip if it has the facility to accept them. Containers should be rinsed, punctured, broken or crushed.
- Commercial waste disposal companies will dispose of used chemical containers.
