The most common method of applying fertiliser is by using a walk-behind or tractor-mounted rotary spreader.
Turf growth results are slower than other methods of application as the fertiliser takes time to break down or dissolve in water before it can move through the soil and become available to the plants.
The operator needs to make sure the overlap of fertiliser is neither excessive nor inadequate, otherwise striping will occur.

Different size prills have different weights and will therefore be thrown different distances by the spreader. This mainly applies to blended fertilisers and can produce patchy results.
