Adopting good work practices

Adopting safe work procedures should:

• get rid of unnecessary tasks
• get rid of tasks involving sudden, jerky movement
• ensure design of all new plant, equipment, containers, work processes and the work environment aims to eliminate or reduce manual handling risks
• change the way tasks are done
• change the way the workplace is organised
• provide suitable mechanical aids such as trolleys, hoists, levers, adjustable height workbenches and seating, hooks and jacks
• provide rest breaks during heavy or repetitive work
• provide training and supervision to employees in how to carry out manual handling tasks safely.

Suggestions how to achieve a safe workplace:

Initial steps:

• plan the task before work begins
• train employees in the skills required
• inform employees about potential hazards
• make sure the workplace is kept clear to avoid bumping into or tripping over things
• suitable protective clothing and equipment should be provided and worn.
